Henderson will share her insights at the 112th Annual Convention of the California State PTA during an afternoon presentation, Friday, April 29.
"I am thrilled at the prospect of speaking to several thousand powerful parent leaders from across the state of Calfiornia," Henderson said. "PTA has always represented the value of parents and family engagement in education, and now exciting new research vindicates its historic commitment. Schools that have strong ties with families and the community are 10 times more likely to make substantial improvements in reading and math. It is now abundantly clear that reforming our schools cannot happen without strong family engagement."
Henderson, a senior consultant with the Community Organizing and Engagement Program at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform in Washington, D.C., is a widely recognized expert who has written extensively on the issue of family engagement. She has also worked in civil rights and anti-poverty programs for the federal government and for the New Jersey Department of Education. Her most recent book, Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships, written with Karen Mapp, Vivian Johnson and Don Davies, was published by The New Press in 2007.
